‘One dead and multiple injuries’ in university shooting – as US police hunt masked gunman

Police are searching for a gunman who opened fire at Michigan State University and injured at least five people – with some victims in a life-threatening condition.

Officers described him as a short black male in a cap, red shoes and a jean jacket and said the campus is locked down.

“There have been shots fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. Please secure-in-place immediately. Police are active on scene,” Michigan State University Police said in a tweet.

Police later said there had been “another reported shooting” and that there were “multiple reported injuries”.

Victims are being taken to Sparrow Hospital.

Large numbers are likely to be locked down as about 50,000 people attend the East Lansing campus – which also hosts evening classes.

A number of buildings have already been secured as police systematically search for the gunman.

Lisa McClain, US representative for Michigan, tweeted: “There are reports of an active shooting on campus at Michigan State University.

“If you are there, police instructions are to Run, Hide, Fight. I am praying for all Spartans right now.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said on Twitter that state police, university police and local officers were at the scene.
