Heavily pregnant woman and unborn baby die after crash involving unmarked police car

A heavily pregnant woman and her baby have died after a crash involving an unmarked police car in southeast London.

The incident happened when the unmarked car was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the A20, near the junction with Kidbrooke Park Road, in Eltham.

London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance all attended.

The heavily pregnant woman, aged 38, who was in the other car, and her unborn baby, sadly died as a result of their injuries.

It is unclear whether the unmarked car was responding to an emergency at the time.

Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, in charge of policing in Greenwich, said: “My heart goes out to the woman’s family and friends who have lost their loved ones in these tragic circumstances.”

“A road closure will remain at the scene today and I am grateful for the patience of the local motorists, who will need to use alternative routes,” Chief Supt Lawry said.

Two officers who were in the unmarked car were taken to hospital following the collision. They have since been discharged.
