Donald Trump confirms Elon Musk in his cabinet

Donald Trump has confirmed Elon Musk will co-lead a government department within his cabinet.

The president-elect said on Tuesday that the Tesla and X owner – who is also the world’s richest man – will work with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the department of government efficiency.

He said the pair “will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies”.

Mr Trump added: “A smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence. I am confident they will succeed!”

Mr Musk endorsed the president-elect in the race for the White House after he survived an assassination attempt in July. He poured more than $119m into backing the Trump campaign.
